Many believe this is in direct correlation with the high cost of disposal fees for dumpers, commercial contractors and home renovators. While this report has been conducted in Sydney, Australia, similar actions occur with frequency in the United States. A New Jersey recycling company has been recently hit with a substantial fine by the United States Environmental Protection Agency nearly five years after illegally dumping more than eight thousand tons of construction debris that contained asbestos products into an unauthorized New York landfill. North Bergen-based Eagle Recycling signed a plea agreement regarding the illegal dumping in which asbestos contained products were dumped improperly causing the potential release of dangerous fibers and chemicals into the air. Eagle also transported the debris with a phony New York State Department of Environmental Conservation permit and falsified the signature of a DEC official. Eagle has agreed to pay a $500,000 penalty and initiate a new environmental compliance plan at its North Bergen facility and pay any restitution and cleanup fee. The Thorpe Elementary school is located in Danvers, Massachusetts, in the northern suburbs of Boston. The Danvers Public Health Department has been aware of several occasions where the dumpsters behind the school were used as an illegal dumping ground for asbestos materials. Officials from the Public Health and Danvers Police are greatly concerned with the health of citizens who live near the school, as well as the children who attend it. The school custodian discovered the debris on numerous occasions and reported it to the police and community officials.
Accredited Environmental Technologies, a Pennsylvania based contractor located in Media will be performing an asbestos inspection of three Happy Valley properties, part of the latest phase in a federal flood mitigation project. According to the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council, the low bid of $1,225 was accepted by Wood County commissioners and said three other proposals were received. Jackson Dynamics submitted a bid for $1500, Envirocheck Inc submitted a bid for $1800, and ASTER Abatement submitted a bid for $2715. After the county was awarded $344,050 in federal flood mitigation funding through a Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, it was decided to purchase the three properties for forty seven thousand dollars, eighty thousand dollars, and one hundred sixty thousand dollars. It was announced last month that the facilities were to be closed or the remainder of this year’s school year as a precaution and to perform more air quality tests. However, this may not be bad news to mesothelioma patients. A recent clinical trial at the Perelman School of Medicine indicates that a modified version of the common cold virus can help attack mesothelioma tumors. Nine mesothelioma patients were injected with this modified version of the virus knows as an “adenovirus”. Researches studied the effects of the treatment and posted the results in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Mesothelioma can be contracted be the ingestion or inhalation of microscopic asbestos fibers. These fibers become embedded on the mesothelium, which is the thin membrane that coats the organs off the body. Compared to other cancers, mesothelioma is one of the most aggressive and deadliest forms. Even if diagnosed in the earlier stages, the prognosis and survival rate is quite low.

According to the International Mesothelioma Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/ Harvard Medical School, approximately 3,000 new patients are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year.

The adenovirus was modified to contain high levels of a certain immune system stimulant called “interferon-alpha”. This is a protein based molecule made by immune cells that boosts a persons ability to stave off viral infections and some cancers.

All of the patients were injected with the virus into the specific cavity that contained the tumor. The patients all had different stages of the disease, to better determine the effect of the virus in varying degrees of metastasis. The virus then began to kill the cancerous cells, a few of the patients demonstrated signs that their immune systems continued to fight the cancerous cells. Evidence of tumor regression and stabilization was seen in five of the nine patients. The remaining four patients that had more advanced stages of the disease, yielded no results from the treatment.

Dr. Steven Albelda, the author of the study, said the treatment could eventually help patients who were diagnosed with earlier stages of the disease. Many oncologists are continuing the study the new treatment in conjunction with chemotherapy. The National Cancer Institute is sponsoring trials in Pennsylvania to further advancements for the treatment procedure.

Curative treatments have yielded few tangible results for mesothelioma patients. Although there is no known cure for this deadly form of cancer, advancements such as these show promise in generating a positive prognosis for patients diagnosed with early stages of the disease.

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should contact an experienced attorney immediately. You may be eligible to receive compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, loss of wages and other damages.

The Philadelphia based manufacturing company known as Crown Holdings, originally called Crown Cork & Seal Company, is pushing a bill that would limit the liability due to asbestos exposure in Idaho. The legislation has already cleared the Senate and is headed to the office of the Governor for approval. Founded in 1892, the company has become one of the world’s leading packaging companies. It currently operates in over 40 countries, employing over 24,000 people. The company boasts that claim that it personally manufactuers 1 out of every 5 beverage cans, and 1 out of every 3 food cans, in North America and Europe. The reasoning behind the bill is one many lobbyists and corporations can relate to. They want the immunity from asbestos related liability, because Crown assumed the liability as a result of a corporate merger. Since the acquisition, Crown Holdings never dealt with any products or companies that used asbestos materials. However, many people suffering from exposure take little comfort in the passing of the buck.
